Meenakari Arts and Shyamala Rao
I am fascinated by the immense canvas of textile crafts in India - weaving, dyeing, printing, embroidery, and much more - but it is block printing that fully engages my creativity.
Professionally trained in Sociology, I found my calling in textile crafts in the 1980s, beginning with embroidery, tailoring, dyeing (tie and dye, resist dyes, etc.), then in exhibitions and fairs for textile arts. Block printing came into my life in the mid 90s, first starting with custom clothing, and more recently in workshops.
My interests in sociology and textile arts have made for interesting experiences when traveling to and living with artisan families in rural north-west India.
